Tele Vue

Tele Vue Optics has been thrilling customers since 1979. It's in the materials they choose, the designs they create, the craftsmanship they demonstrate and the images they deliver. Creating "goodies" for the observing enthusiast has been founder Al Nagler's continuing pursuit.

Al put his lifelong love of amateur astronomy to work as a professional optical designer in 1958. But, it was his involvement in designing NASA lunar landing simulators that most directly influences Tele Vue products of today. Al wanted his own observing equipment to deliver that seemingly limitless vista created for the astronauts. Producing wide, full-field sharpness and high contrast images are the keys.

In the early 80s, Tele Vue launched its Plossl eyepiece design. So improved in edge sharpness, it was awarded U.S. and international patents. They also launched the "Nagler" series of eyepieces with their remarkable 82° apparent field and 10 times the field sharpness of any previous eyepiece. Nagler eyepieces approach the realization of Al's dream for "spacewalk" viewing, even more so with the new long eye relief Nagler Type 4 models, long focal length Type 5 models, and short focal length Type 6 models. And the innovation continues today with the introduction in 2007 of the 100° Ethos series of eyepieces.

Tele Vue also pioneered the multipurpose, diffraction limited, 4-element, fast refractor as a serious, portable alternative to Newtonians and SCTs. The current Tele Vue-NP 101 is the ultimate evolution. This Benchmark 4 inch, f/5.4 scope sets new standards in both wide-angle and high power viewing. With the NP101is and NP127is ("Imaging System") versions, astro-imaging capability has reached new heights. Every scope is built by Tele Vue in their Chester, NY facility and Tele Vue telescopes are built start to finish by a single technician with quality checks at several critical steps along the way.

Tele Vue Refractors
Tele Vue Refractors
Every Tele Vue refractor, from the Tele Vue-60 to NP-127, is a beautifully handcrafted "heirloom" quality instruments, capable of extraordinary low-to-high power ranges, with fields of view up to 5.5° (over 11 Moon diameters wide), and great photographic/imaging capabilities. Their sharpness and contrast levels also place them above any other instruments for nature, wildlife and bird viewing. When it comes to viewing double stars, the Moon, Sun or planets, APO refractors, because of their inherent high contrast and lower sensitivity to atmospheric turbulence, often rival or surpass far larger instruments. And for imaging, some of the most astonishing deep-sky and planetary images come from Tele Vue APO refractors.

Because they are built by Tele Vue in their Chester, NY facility, you also get: 1) A 5-year warranty; 2) Exemplary construction - Every model uses precision machined and black-anodized aluminum housings, a focuser that is hand-fitted for smoothness and a sliding dew-shield; 3) Superior Optics - Each instrument is made with hand-tuned lens spacings to assure diffraction-limited performance, along with full multicoatings for maximum contrast.

In 2007, Tele Vue once again broadened the amateur astronomer's perspective on the universe and introduced a new observing experience; 100° of pure Tele Vue quality. The field area of this new eyepiece is more than 50% larger than an 82° field if tge same size. The Tele Vue Ethos is essentially multiple eyepieces, delivering the true field size of a longer focal length, narrower apparent field eyepiece with the benefits of higher power and darker sky background.
Tele Vue Nagler Eyepieces
With Nagler eyepieces, Tele Vue's aim was to approach the wide angle perspective of naked eye vision, while maintaining the highest degree of sharpness, contrast, and viewing comfort. The goal was to allow the telescope to virtually "disappear," leaving the impact of "spacewalk" viewing. The result is an extremely wide apparent field of 82° with outstanding sharpness and exceptionally comfortable eye relief for eyepieces of very short focal length.

Concept: Using my Wide-Field design as a starting point, I looked to bring Nagler-like performance to the 60 degree+ field class with the Panoptic series. The idea of a lens to "interface" between the eyepiece and Barlow struck me as the proper way to keep size, weight and cost to a minimum while improving edge of field performance even further. I later developed this idea into the Powermates. – Al Nagler. With the Panoptic series, Tele Vue has taken the Wide-Field concept to Nagler-like performance levels – A meaningful advance over any eyepiece in the 68° field class.
Tele Vue Radian Eyepieces
As the hobbyist population ages, more amateurs need eyeglasses. It was time to adjust the mix of parameters for observers who require or prefer long eye-relief. Under the framework of the "Nagler" design, the new field was set at 60° with a uniform 20mm eye-relief. Optimizing this new design with fully multicoated exotic glasses, we reached our new goal of full field sharpness with true orthoscopic linearity, highest contrast for critical planetary viewing, and compact size. The size and weight blend also makes the Radian preferable for small instruments and bino-viewers, and allows the convenience of being parfocal with other 1.25" Tele Vue eyepieces. – Al Nagler

Since Tele Vue introduced our Plössls in 1980, they have won praise and patents, including a patent in Japan. Tele Vue Plössls, designed by Al Nagler, have been a recognized benchmark of performance and value in the class of 50° apparent field of view eyepieces. While the Plössls may be Tele Vue's least expensive eyepiece line, they still enjoy the same care and attention to detail as their most expensive.
